V.Delta, having the honour to be the coordinator of the EC-funded project REFRESH, successfully hosted the recently held kick-off meeting in Monaco.
This is a very prestigious project which involves 19 members from various sectors of shipping including ship operators, shipyards, classification societies, universities, R&D institutions, local authorities, associations and consultants.
REFRESH’s focus is on the retro-fitting of existing ships to improve energy efficiency. Its work helps to support the introduction of the Energy Efficiency Design and Operation Index (EEDI/EEIO), which has been developed by the IMO initially for new buildings. This important index is complemented by the implementation of the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) which will encompass a number of initiatives designed to maximize energy efficiency during in-service operations.
The REFRESH project will contribute dynamic energy modelling to help with the better formulation of the EEDI/O as well as providing strong support to the effective use of SEEMP on board. It’s specific objectives are to:
Special focus is being given to ferries, bulk carriers and tankers. In three years time, upon the completion of the project, REFRESH will be able to provide the knowledge and tools to enable ship owners and other key industry stakeholders to respond cost effectively to the environmental legislation.
Matteo Di Maio, MD of V.Delta commented: “We are excited to coordinate this project that will certainly contribute to expand our know-how in energy management and conservation.”
